Your artist controls the first two hours. You control the next thirty days — and that is where most disappointing brows are actually made. Microblading aftercare is not complicated, but Kathmandu adds three problems that generic aftercare cards ignore: monsoon humidity, road dust, and strong high-altitude UV. This is the day-by-day rulebook we give our own clients.
The one rule behind every other rule
Healing skin pushes things out. Every instruction below exists to stop the skin lifting pigment before it has settled. Moisture softens scabs, friction lifts them, and anything that speeds up cell turnover — acids, retinol, sweat, sun — takes pigment with it.
Day by day
Days 1–3: darker than you expected
Your brows will look bolder, sharper and darker than the final result. This is normal and it is not the colour you will keep. Expect mild swelling and a little tenderness.
- Blot gently with a clean tissue every hour or two for the first evening to lift lymph fluid. Lymph left to dry forms thick scabs, and thick scabs take pigment with them.
- No water on the brows. Wash your face around them with a cloth.
- Sleep on your back if you can. A pillowcase drags.
- Apply the aftercare balm your artist gave you in a very thin layer — a shine, not a coat. Suffocating the area is as bad as letting it crack.
Days 4–7: the flaking phase
Light flaking begins and the brows feel itchy. This is the hardest week and the one that decides your result.
- Do not pick, scratch or rub. A scab pulled early leaves a gap in the stroke that a touch-up has to rebuild.
- No makeup on or near the brows. No brow pencil, no gel, no foundation over the area.
- No swimming, sauna, steam or hot showers with the face in the spray.
- Keep hair off the brows. A fringe that sits on healing skin traps sweat and oil.

Days 8–14: the ghosting phase — do not panic
Around day ten most clients message us convinced the pigment has vanished. It has not. A fresh layer of skin has formed over it, and it takes a few weeks to become translucent again. Nobody should judge their brows before week four. This is the phase where anxious clients go back to a cheaper artist for a “fix” and end up with over-worked skin.
Weeks 3–6: colour resurfaces
Strokes reappear and the tone settles, usually softer and cooler than day one. You can resume normal skincare on the rest of the face — but keep acids and retinol away from the brow area permanently, not just during healing.
Weeks 6–8: the touch-up
This appointment is part of the treatment, not an upsell. Skin does not take pigment evenly, and the touch-up perfects density, symmetry and any light spots. Skipping it is the most common reason brows fade unevenly in year one. It is included with both microblading at NPR 15,000 and nano brows at NPR 32,500.
Three Kathmandu-specific problems
Monsoon humidity
Humid air keeps the skin damp, which softens scabs and slows healing. Between June and September, blot more often, keep a fan or dehumidified room for sleeping if you can, and be stricter than usual about the ten-day no-water rule. If you can choose your appointment month, autumn and spring heal cleanest.
Road dust and pollution
Healing brows are an open door. For the first week, avoid long periods on a bike or in open traffic. If you must ride, a clean visor helps and a scarf does not — fabric rubs. Do not “wash the dust off” with water in the first ten days; blot with a clean tissue and let your artist know if the area looks irritated.
UV at altitude
Sun is the single biggest cause of premature fading and colour shift, and Kathmandu’s UV is stronger than most clients assume. Once fully healed, use SPF 30 or higher on the brows every single day — this alone can add a year to your result. During healing, no sunscreen on the brows; use a wide-brimmed hat instead.
The permanent list: what shortens every PMU result
- Retinol, AHAs and BHAs anywhere near the brow. They exist to accelerate cell turnover, which is exactly what expels pigment.
- Chemical peels and strong facials over the brow area. Tell your facialist you have PMU.
- Sun without SPF. The main cause of warm or ashy colour shift.
- Oily skin — not a mistake, just a fact. It fades faster, which is why oily skin does better with nano brows than microblading.
- Laser treatments near the brow. Always disclose PMU before any laser or IPL session.
When to actually worry
Normal: swelling for two days, tenderness, itching, flaking, ghosting, and a colour that looks too cool at week two. Call your artist if you see spreading redness beyond the brow, heat, throbbing pain, yellow-green discharge, or a fever. True infection after PMU is rare with single-use cartridges and proper barrier film, but it needs to be seen the same day, not messaged about next week.
Also call — without waiting for the touch-up — if one brow has lost noticeably more pigment than the other, or if a scab was pulled off early. Both are fixable at the touch-up, but your artist should know in advance.
How long it should last, done right
Microblading holds one to three years and nano brows two to three, with the range decided almost entirely by skin type, sun exposure and your skincare. Clients who use daily SPF and keep acids away from the brow routinely sit at the top of that range; clients who do neither sit at the bottom of it. The full retention picture is in how long nano brows last.
Frequently asked questions
How do I care for microblading in the first week?
Keep the brows completely dry for ten days, blot lymph fluid gently on the first evening, apply a very thin layer of the aftercare balm, and do not pick the flaking. No makeup, swimming, sauna, steam or heavy sweating, and sleep on your back to avoid dragging on a pillowcase.
Why do my brows look like the pigment has disappeared?
That is the ghosting phase, usually days eight to fourteen. A new layer of skin has formed over the pigment and it looks faint until that layer becomes translucent. Colour resurfaces between weeks three and six, so do not judge the result before week four.
Can I wash my face after microblading?
Yes, but around the brows, not over them. Use a damp cloth on the rest of the face and keep water off the brow area for ten days. After that, gentle cleansing is fine, but avoid retinol and acid exfoliants on the brows permanently.
When can I wear makeup again after microblading?
Keep all makeup off the brows and the skin immediately around them for at least ten to fourteen days, until the flaking has fully finished. Makeup elsewhere on the face is fine from day one as long as nothing touches the healing area.
Is the touch-up really necessary?
Yes. Skin never takes pigment perfectly evenly, and the six to eight week touch-up corrects density, symmetry and light spots. It is included in the price of microblading and nano brows, and skipping it is the main reason brows fade unevenly in the first year.
What makes microblading fade faster?
Sun without sunscreen, oily skin, retinol or AHA and BHA exfoliants near the brows, chemical peels over the area, and picking scabs during healing. Daily SPF 30 or higher on healed brows is the single most effective way to extend the result.
