Two to three years is the honest answer to how long nano brows last — but that range is not luck. Two clients treated on the same day by the same artist can sit at opposite ends of it, and the difference is almost entirely skin type, sun and skincare. Here is what actually controls retention, when a touch-up is due, and how colour correction works when old pigment has shifted.
The realistic timeline
| Stage | When | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Initial heal | Weeks 1–6 | Dark, then flaking, then ghosting, then colour resurfacing |
| Included touch-up | Weeks 6–8 | Density, symmetry and light spots perfected |
| Settled result | Months 3–12 | Softer and cooler than day one — this is your true colour |
| Gentle fade | Months 12–24 | Strokes soften; still reads as a groomed brow |
| Colour boost due | Months 18–36 | Refresh before it fades to nothing, not after |
PMU nano brows are NPR 32,500 and take 120 to 150 minutes, with the six to eight week touch-up included. Microblading at NPR 15,000 sits lower on the same scale, at one to three years.
What decides where you land in that range
Skin type
Oily skin fades faster than dry skin — every time. Higher sebum and faster cell turnover push pigment out sooner. Nano brows are still the right choice for oily skin because they hold their crispness where microblading blurs, but expect the shorter end of the range and plan a refresh nearer two years than three.
Sun exposure
The biggest controllable factor, and the most underestimated in Kathmandu. UV breaks pigment down and shifts its tone. Daily SPF 30 or higher on healed brows is the single cheapest way to add a year to your result.
Your skincare shelf
Retinol, glycolic and salicylic acids all exist to accelerate cell turnover. Used near the brow, they systematically remove your pigment. Keep them below the brow bone for the life of the work. The same applies to chemical peels and strong resurfacing facials — tell your facialist you have PMU.
Pigment quality and depth
Pigment placed too shallow flakes off in the first month. Placed too deep it blurs and shifts blue-grey. Correct depth is the artist’s job and it is what you are paying for. Cheap pigments also shift colour faster, which is why we train and work on Goochie pigments and are willing to name the brand.

Your own metabolism
Younger, faster-metabolising skin clears pigment more quickly than mature skin. Iron levels, thyroid conditions and some medications also affect retention. None of this is a problem — it just changes the refresh interval.
Touch-up vs colour boost vs colour correction
These three get confused constantly, and they cost very different amounts of your time.
- Touch-up (weeks 6–8): part of the original treatment and included in the price. It completes the work; it is not a repair.
- Colour boost (every 18–36 months): a refresh over work that is still visible. Shorter than the original appointment because the shape already exists.
- Colour correction: needed when old pigment has shifted warm, orange, grey or blue, or when the shape is wrong. This is a separate skill, sometimes requiring lightening sessions first, and it is always quoted after seeing the brows in person.
Do not wait until your brows have vanished. A boost over a faint but present result is faster, cheaper and matches your original shape. Once the work is gone entirely you are paying for a full new procedure.
When old brows have gone warm, grey or blue
Colour shift is normal chemistry, not necessarily bad work. Pigments are built from mixed particles that break down at different rates: as the cool particles fade first, warm ones are left behind and brows read orange or reddish. Carbon-heavy pigments implanted too deep can go the other way and read blue-grey.
Correcting it means neutralising the remaining tone before adding anything new — an olive or ash modifier over orange, a warm corrector over blue-grey — or lightening the area first if there is too much pigment to work over. No honest artist can quote this from a message. Bring your brows, bare, to a consultation. If someone offers to work over old faded PMU without seeing it first, book elsewhere.
How to get the top of the range
- Attend the six to eight week touch-up. Non-negotiable.
- Daily SPF 30+ on the brows, all year, including cloudy days.
- No retinol or acid exfoliants on or near the brows, permanently.
- No peels or resurfacing over the brow area; disclose PMU before any laser or IPL.
- Book a colour boost when the strokes soften — around 18 to 24 months on oily skin, 24 to 36 on dry.
- Take a bare-faced photo at week six. It is the reference you will want two years later.
Fading faster than expected?
If your nano brows have noticeably faded inside six months, something specific caused it. The usual culprits, in order: pigment placed too shallow, a skipped touch-up, retinol or acid used on the area, heavy sun without SPF, or a scab picked during healing. Very oily skin combined with any of the above compounds the effect. Bring photos of the brows fresh, at week six, and now — that sequence tells an experienced artist what happened. If you are choosing between techniques for the first time, our microblading vs nano brows comparison covers which one your skin can actually hold, and the aftercare rulebook covers the thirty days that decide it.
Frequently asked questions
How long do nano brows last?
Two to three years for most clients. Oily skin, sun exposure without sunscreen, and retinol or acid exfoliants used near the brows push you toward the shorter end, while dry skin and daily SPF push you toward the longer end.
How often do nano brows need a touch-up?
One touch-up at six to eight weeks is included in the NPR 32,500 price and completes the original treatment. After that, a colour boost every 18 to 36 months keeps the result crisp — sooner on oily skin, later on dry.
Do nano brows fade completely?
They fade gradually rather than disappearing at once, usually softening over two to three years. Booking a colour boost while the work is still faintly visible is cheaper and easier than waiting until it has gone entirely and paying for a full new procedure.
Why have my brows turned orange or grey?
Pigments contain particles that break down at different rates, so as cooler tones fade the remaining warm ones can read orange, while carbon-heavy pigment placed too deep can read blue-grey. Both are corrected by neutralising the remaining tone, sometimes after a lightening session, and must be assessed in person.
Can nano brows be refreshed over faded microblading?
Often yes, but it needs a consultation first. Old pigment that has shifted colour may require correction or lightening before new strokes are placed, so bring photos and come in bare-faced rather than booking the procedure directly.
What makes nano brows fade fastest?
Sun without SPF, retinol and AHA or BHA exfoliants near the brows, chemical peels over the area, oily skin, and skipping the six to eight week touch-up. Daily sunscreen is the single most effective habit for retention.
