The 2026 trends worth asking for
Micro French and reverse French
The thinnest possible tip line, sometimes in black or deep red instead of white, sometimes flipped to sit at the cuticle instead. It reads as expensive rather than decorated, grows out gracefully, and suits short nails as well as long almond shapes.
Chrome, glazed and “velvet” finishes
Chrome powder buffed over a gel base gives the glazed-doughnut look that will not stop trending; magnetic “cat eye” gels give a velvet shimmer that shifts as the hand moves. Both are powder-and-topcoat techniques, so they add a little time but very little wear risk.
Milky and sheer bases
Soft translucent whites and pinks — flattering on every skin tone and extremely forgiving as they grow out, which makes them the sensible choice if you cannot commit to a three-weekly infill.
Hand-painted line work and lettering
Fine freehand detail, single-nail accents, initials, small script. This is where a technician’s brush control shows, and it is the category that separates a nail artist from a polish applier.
Minimal 3D and structured accents

Choosing a shape that survives your week
- Short almond or squoval: the practical default. Strong, easy to type with, catches on nothing.
- Medium almond: the most flattering length-to-strength compromise, and the most requested.
- Coffin/ballerina: beautiful, but the flat tip is a lever — expect more breakage if you work with your hands.
- Stiletto: event nails. Not a daily driver.
Tell your technician what your hands actually do. Someone who types all day, cooks daily and rides a scooter needs a different apex and length to someone who does not, and a good technician will build for it rather than argue about it.
Making it last three weeks, not one
The first 24 hours
Gel is cured hard by the lamp, so there is no drying time — but the bond keeps settling. Avoid very hot water and long soaks on day one.
The daily habits that matter
- Cuticle oil, twice a day. The single most effective thing you can do. Flexible nails and hydrated skin resist chipping and lifting; dry, brittle nails snap and pull the product with them.
- Gloves for washing up and cleaning. Hot water and detergent are the fastest route to lifting at the cuticle.
- Stop using them as tools. Opening cans, scraping labels, prising lids. This is what breaks nails, not the product.
- Keep them dry after long water exposure. Water swells the natural nail slightly; repeated swelling and drying under a rigid product creates lifting.
Infills, not soak-offs
Extensions grow out, they do not wear out. An infill every three to four weeks rebalances the apex and refreshes the colour at a fraction of the time and cost of removing and rebuilding. Leaving extensions eight weeks without an infill shifts the stress point down the nail and is the most common cause of a break — and of the natural nail damage that gets blamed on acrylic.
Never peel them off
Peeling gel takes layers of the natural nail plate with it. That is where “acrylic ruined my nails” actually comes from — almost always removal, almost never the product. Soak-off should be done properly with acetone, foils and a gentle push, or with careful e-file reduction by a trained technician.
How to spot a technician worth returning to
- Tools are visibly sanitised or single-use, and files are either new or personal to you.
- They use a dry or waterless manicure before extensions — soaking swells the nail plate and causes lifting later.
- Cuticles are pushed back, not cut aggressively.
- They build a proper apex rather than a flat coat, and they check the shape from the side.
- They tell you honestly when a length will not survive your job.
- They book your infill before you leave.
