It is not lipstick and it is not filler. Nothing is injected, nothing swells permanently, and the finish is a natural tint rather than a solid block of colour.
The technique is a wash of colour rather than a hard outline. Done well, healed lip blush looks like your own lips on a very good day — which is exactly why so many clients ask for it before a wedding, a shoot, or simply to stop reapplying lipstick five times a day. Lip blush vs old-style lip tattoo vs lip filler
- Lip blush — soft, buildable pigment, no hard border, heals 40–50% lighter than day one. Semi-permanent, fades over 2–3 years.
- Old-style permanent lip liner — the dark outlined look of the 1990s, usually done with unstable pigments that shifted blue or grey. This is what people are picturing when they say lip tattoos “go wrong”, and it is not what modern PMU does.
- Lip filler — a hyaluronic acid injection that changes lip volume. Lip blush changes lip colour and definition only. If you have had filler, wait at least four weeks before lip blush so the tissue has settled.

Lips cost more than brows almost everywhere in the world, and there is a reason. The lip area is more vascular, more sensitive, takes longer to numb properly, and needs more passes to build even colour. An artist quoting NPR 6,000 for lip blush is either using low-grade pigment or is not accounting for the time the procedure honestly takes.
Choosing your colour
This is the part that decides whether you love the result. Three things drive the choice:
- Your natural lip colour. Many clients in Nepal have naturally deep or unevenly pigmented lips, often darker at the outer edges. Pigment adds to what is already there — it does not paint over it. A warm corrective tone is used first to neutralise grey or violet tones before the desired shade goes on.
- Your undertone. Warm undertones suit coral, brick and warm rose. Cool undertones suit berry, mauve and blue-based pinks. Getting this backwards is why some healed lips look “off” even though the colour looked perfect on the day.
- How bold you want to go. Always choose one shade deeper than the result you want on day one, because roughly half the intensity is lost in healing. Your artist should be showing you the swatch on your own skin, not on a printed chart.

The healing timeline, honestly
- Day 1: Lips look bright, bold and slightly swollen — think a strong lipstick. This is not the final result.
- Days 2–3: Peak swelling settles. Colour darkens and looks more intense before it lightens.
- Days 3–6: Flaking. The lips feel dry and tight and shed a thin layer of colour. Do not pick or bite the flakes off — that pulls pigment out unevenly.
- Days 7–14: The “disappearing” phase. Colour can look almost gone. It is still there, sitting under fresh skin that has not yet turned translucent.
- Weeks 3–5: True colour resurfaces, softer and more natural than day one.
- Week 6–8: Touch-up appointment. Lips almost always need a second layer — it is part of the treatment, not an upsell, and it is where patchy spots and colour depth get corrected.
The cold sore warning nobody should skip
If you have ever had a cold sore (oral herpes simplex), the trauma of a lip tattoo can trigger an outbreak, and an outbreak during healing will pull pigment out and can scar. The solution is simple and standard: speak to your doctor about a course of antiviral tablets starting two days before your appointment and continuing for a few days after. An artist who does not ask you about cold sores before booking a lip procedure is skipping a basic safety question.
Aftercare that protects your colour
Keep lips clean and lightly balmed with the ointment your artist gives you. For the first 10 days: no spicy or oily food touching the lips, no hot drinks straight from the cup, no swimming, sauna or steam, no exfoliating scrubs, and no makeup on the lips. Drink through a straw for the first two days. Once healed, SPF lip balm is the single biggest factor in how long the colour lasts — Kathmandu sits at altitude with strong year-round UV, and UV fades lip pigment faster than anything else.
Who should not get lip blush
A responsible artist turns work away. Lip blush is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, on Accutane or within 12 months of stopping, undergoing chemotherapy, prone to keloid scarring, have uncontrolled diabetes, or have an active cold sore or any broken skin on the lips. Recent lip filler, blood thinners and autoimmune conditions all need to be discussed at consultation first.

- Can I see healed lip results at six weeks, not just day-one photos?
- What pigment brand do you use, and will you show me the bottle?
- Is the needle single-use and opened in front of me?
- Do you pre-treat cold-sore-prone clients?
